Toxic Chemical Release Inventory - Am I Supposed To Do This?

What is it?
Form R, or the Toxic Chemical Release Inventory (TRI) Report, is an annual report that facilities must submit to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) if they manufacture, process, or otherwise use any of the chemicals listed on the Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) list. The TRI list includes approximately 1,800 chemicals that are known or suspected to be hazardous to human health or the environment.

Who needs one?
The following types of facilities are likely required to submit an annual Form R:

  • Foundries
  • Welding facilities
  • Chemical manufacturers
  • Paper and pulp mills
  • Pharmaceutical manufacturers
  • Power plants
  • Manufacturing facilities
  • Metal processing facilities

Can I get in trouble for not reporting?
Potentially. Here's a few reasons why:

  • Civil penalties
  • Criminal penalties
  • Loss of business
  • Environmental damage
  • Increased regulatory scrutiny
